Active for just over a year, Montreal rapper SLM (pronounced “Slim”) unveiled her debut project SLM: The Complete Flex Season last winter — with bracing anthems of empowerment and emancipation, with a tinge of R&B. Claiming her fundamental desire to break boundaries, SLM is not afraid to be unsettling: she will put herself at risk to meet new challenges, on the one hand, and highlight the profound failure of systemic racism, on the other. She does not consider herself an activist, though: her existence as a black artist is a political act in itself.
